“What do you want to be when grow up?” Apparently, my answer was always the same – “I want to be a dad.” This is what my mom told me I said when I was young, and it doesn’t surprise me in any way. For as long as I can remember, I wanted a large family. Four boys later, my love for being a parent hasn’t changed. Mind you, it’s not always easy, but it is most definitely rewarding.
Parents serve as role models. So, in addition to my dad, I know other individuals who strongly played the part of father figure for me. For this reason, I refer to today as Fathers’ Day. I believe parenting is a collective effort, thus the location of the apostrophe.
Matthieu calls me daddy; Max and Micah refer to me as father; and Marc jokingly calls me “pops”. Whatever the title, I’ll take it. I feel exponentially blessed to get to play a strong role in continually shaping my sons’ development. Happy Fathers’ Day.
PS – The cat is my oldest son’s newest “child”, Jo-Jo.
